Required Question-
1. The Project I chose for this is the Opacity drawing. This was a challenging drawing because I wasn't familiar with the Pastel chalk and plastic technique. I however, was able to push through it and so I created a successful drawing. Below is the process I went through creating it:
These are previous ideas I had before choosing the final:
I had a tough time deciding between the Popsicle or the apple.

Apple in plastic progress:
I finally decided to choose the Apple, however I was also required to add more objects. So I decided to add a few candies and an empty candy wrapper.

Final Drawing with filled in background.
The background was one of the hardest as I added many different colors such as green, purple, red, etc. Creating the apple inside of the plastic was also very tough and I wasn't sure if I was doing it correctly.

Finished opacity drawing.
-filled in background
-candies added
-highlights create stretch and light effect
-background adds depth as well as candies
The chalk created a lot of mess and sometimes interfered with blending in colors. I also had to do the candies without a reference photo which was very challenging, but thanks to previous practice with perception and highlights, I was able to successfully add it in, which made the drawing less plain. With all the troubles I had with this drawing I also believe I did very well with color choices. The contrast between cold and warm colors gives the drawing a visually appealing look to it and makes the colors less dull.

Chosen Questions-
1. How do you describe your artistic style/perspective? How do you define success as an artist? What do you find most rewarding about being an artist? What are some of the most important skills you draw upon to create your work? What are some of the most significant things you've learned through art-making?
My artistic style personally is a mix of abstract and realism. I try to focus more on colors then anything because i'm naturally inclined with such things. However my perspective on art is a broad spectrum of things. I believe that if something that someone created makes someone else feel in awe, wonder, emotional, melancholic, calm, or maybe even distraught, then I believe it is a successful art piece.
What I find most rewarding about being an artist is the aspect of creating it and the outcome. Creating something is peaceful and brings your mind somewhere else in the world; it opens up your thoughts and emotions, which ends up beautifully being displayed on said art. The outcome is also very rewarding. The feeling of relief of the art being finished is pleasant, and the compliments of many others is encouraging.
The skills I use is detail and creating exactly how I see something to be, whether that means perception, shapes, lengths, color, or depth, the detail makes it all more skillful. A state of having a blank mind while doing so also helps greatly. It is much like meditation, where the mind is blank and you focus on one thing. I believe this state of mind is where the most emotion and skill can be released onto whatever it is you are doing.
The most significant thing that I have learned through art-making, is confidence. Confidence is a huge factor in any successful art piece. How do you create something with meaning or effect when you yourself are insecure in your own skills and what the outcome will turn out to be? The answer is, you really can't. Confidence allows for an easier ride while creating something and not being afraid to go past your comfort zone, allowing way for experience and completion. That to me is incredibly important, and i'm sure many other artist would agree with me.
2. What medium was your favorite to work with? Explain why and how you were able to master the techniques associated with this medium.
My favorite so far would have to be the pastel chalk and also oil painting.
Oil paint has always been my go to medium. I am more experienced with it and spent many years using oil, however, I tend to get more impatient with paint, which makes the art look messy when finished.
When it comes to pastel chalk, it's very frustrating and can be annoying whenever the colors accidentally mix together. Though the outcome of using the chalk always ends up successful somehow (for me at least). Because of that, even though the process is quite a pain, I enjoy it very much.
I wouldn't say I mastered these two mediums, but instead became experienced using them. I know how they generally work and what different things you can do with them. However, I like to just do whatever feels right and what makes the desired look that I want.

3. Discuss one project where you felt you were the least successful. Explain why you felt this way. What would you do differently to change this piece? Explain .
This isn't necessarily a project, but nonetheless, I feel like I honestly failed on this one. The crinkle effect of the ends of the wrappers were well done and I actually really like that part of it. However, what I failed on was creating the candy to look like it had an actual realistic shape. It looks very flat and I should have made the height of the candy longer. Because I didn't do that, it appears as though it was smashed.

4. Choose 2 mini lessons that you felt were the most beneficial in your learning for that particular project. Include photos of these and explain thoroughly. Do you feel you needed more instruction for success? Explain or did you feel that the instruction given was enough to ensure success? Explain.
The first picture is of two shapes, a sphere and a cone. I feel like these lessons/drawings helped me with shading and how it creates overall shape and realism, as well as how shadows affect the direction and depth in which the drawing takes place. The second picture is of a green bell pepper. This lesson/drawing, helped me with the importance of a multitude of things, including: color, shading, and highlighting. All three of those is what really makes a drawing look realistic and successful. I learned that it's important to add every single color that you can see in the original picture into your drawing. This makes it look more realistic. Highlighting also creates the shape and gives the illusion of light hitting a specific spot on an object, making it more 3-D like. I feel the instruction given to me was enough to ensure success. I was given all the general techniques and the rest was up to me to create something using said techniques, with help along the way every now and then of course. |
